A record of bright and true guitar instrumentals from Kentucky musician Nathan Salsburg here. Salsburg seems like an interesting guy - he’s an expert on guitar folklore who works with (among other places) the Alan Lomax archive. Affirmed finds him pouring all of his wide-reaching knowledge into seven original compositions. So many American and British styles are touched upon here that it would be pointless to list them all. Best just to sit back and admire Salsburg’s quick fingers and way with melody. Affirmed is out via No Quarter (Doug Paisley, Endless Boogie).

Nathan Salsburg brings us some more finger picking John Fahey-esque guitar blues with this 2011 debut release on No Quarter. If you enjoyed his 2018 release 'Third' or have a soft spot for Glenn Jones, or Daniel Bachman, then rest assured 'Affirmed' should be right up your street. Highlights include opener 'Sought & Hidden' which is a proper toe-tapping whilst drinking beer on the front porch kinda tune, 'Back Home In Bogenbrook' is more reflective and sparse, and a great version of 'The False True Love', a track that Shirley Collins fans will be familiar with, and the only vocal track on the LP. Excellent stuff, and a debut whose promise has since been fulfilled on subsequent releases.
