- INNI by Sigur Rós
With their grand, gracious brooding neo-classical rock, Iceland's premier ethereal behemoths have turned heads and melted hearts for over a decade now. Now, to be childish, I could not listen to these with ease due to the proclamation from a certain tattooed LA rocker that he and his then-girlfriend Pamela Anderson liked to get jiggy to Sigur Ros. All I could think about was a sweaty grunting mess of straggly hair and bouncing botox globes for years when these twinkly, epic sound-scapes hit my lugs. A nightmare scenario I'm sure you'll agree. I've managed to detach the music from the images however, over the last couple of years, but to be honest, Jonsi's mewling falsetto does start to grate after a while and their laudably powerful post-rock shimmer and churn does plod a little for my personal tastes. It can't be denied that they're a powerful force to be reckoned with sonically however and this live album attests to the sheer magnitude and elegant majesty of their music. I recall a clip of them from the 'Screaming Masterpiece' documentary that completely floored me, a live snippet that found them dishing out a wall of coruscating, swirling mercurial noise that had the hairs on my neck sticking out. I thought that I'd seen all there was to them twice at gigs in Leeds when they were treading the boards with Godspeed et al but this was something much more formidable. So, I'm listening to this and it's hits a-go-go interspersed with crowd noises but I am much more intrigued about watching the DVD and admiring the way they undoubtedly slay every last nook and cranny of the Alexandra Palace with these sensitive, tender pieces.
