- Halloween Record w/ Special Effects by Thee Cormans
I like this kind of thing. These guys are rocking the scuzzy garage surf sound like it's 1965 on this Halloween-themed collection of instrumentals, punctuated by horror movie sound effects. The guitar tone has that perfect harsh wibble and the grooves are pounding for a dancefloor-filling smorgasbord of retro lo-fi greatness. Think of the B-movie stylings of Man...Or Astroman? or The Ghastly Ones but with more of In The Red's unmistakeable garage fuzz aesthetic. In places it gets a little bit psychedelic but largely this is straight ahead spooky rock'n'roll, split between 'surf' and 'fuzz' tracks (I'm pretty sure the sole difference is that the 'surf' ones have a reverb effect on the guitar instead of fuzz). On the second side there's more songs than the first and they're generally shorter. This works better for me, since the best surf songs tend to clock in around the two minute mark anyway. Get 'em dancing, stop before they're bored. In fact my favourite cut on the entire LP, 'Surf Shack of Doom', clocks in at 1:16 as the shortest proper song on the record. If you like that '60s surf sound and modern, faster garage rock, this'll go down a treat.
