Not only have the ever-reliable Underwater Peoples dropped a couple of excellent EPs this week, there's also a full-length from Australia's Twerps. Before I spun it I totally expected this to be a shambling, lo-fi affair but actually it's quite polished, with boy-girl vocals complementing their lazy sun-drenched indie-pop shuffles. I wasn't crazy about this on first listen but over time the subtle melodies and casual delivery become totally comforting and warmly likeable, like Woods playing Go Betweens covers. The guitar tones are lovely, bright and soothing, and sometimes the vocal delivery has an almost Dylan-esque tone to it, but less harshly direct. In fact the jangly, chiming guitar and nonchalant delivery recall the best antipodean summer indie pop vibes of yesteryear. If you like that last Real Estate album but felt it was a bit too polished, this could be just the record for you.
