Video Games by Lana Del Rey

Lana del Rey is the latest next big thing. What with her film star like looks and her disarmingly beautiful voice, she's sent many a blogger and music journo into wanking frenzies across the web. She does sound amazing. Her voice is rich and powerful and wouldn't sound out of place gracing a David Lynch soundtrack. She has a slightly dark timbre to her songs. The title track “Video Games” is a strikingly sentimental, haunting ballad that reminds me of a maudlin Dusty Springfield or (insert country style balladeers name)...someone of that ilk. The flip side is more conventional, but is still quite dramatic and alluring. A haunting, heart-meltingly good slice of quite maudlin Americana. She is one to watch (with night vision binoculars on, outside her apartment...). Dramatic stuff.

I love the two songs on this single, the A-side sitting somewhere between Florence & The Machine (without the 'shouty' vocals) and Twin Peaks.

The B-side chorus can't help remind me of 'Wicked Game' by Chris Isaak.
