London Calling by The Clash

London Calling was the third album by The Clash and was originally released in 1979. It is widely regarded as the band’s greatest moment and one of the best albums to ever be committed to tape. It comprises a range of styles from punk to reggae and ska to rockabilly and dealt with many issues of the day such as unemployment and racial conflict. Essential.

By the time London Calling came out, the Clash had outgrown their punk origins. They sounded more like a mainstream rock band, albeit one with extraordinary power, passion, conviction and purpose. What also separated them from the mainstream (and punk) scene of the day was their willingness to experiment with worldbeats and music as varied as ska, reggae and dub. The result is the perfect balance between their early punk and their later experimentalism. In short, everyone should have a copy of this album in their collections.
