Ooh, this record's pretty hard to pin down. I like that about it. I don't know a lot about Robert Lippok but here he seems to be creating some kind of hybrid take on downtempo early '90s techno, keeping it glacial and minimal for the most part. The beats are a little bit disjointed but never disorientating, instead luring us deep into their head-nodding stop-start grooves. Apparently there are samples and field recordings in places here but mostly what I'm hearing is synthesised techno grooves of a very high quality, taking some cues from other experimental and minimal music too. The record starts out very slowly for the first track, building up the anticipation for the persistent pumping beats to follow. The synth tones he uses vary greatly from feather-light ripples to filthy roars but he's never out to alienate the listener and it's a comfortable and absorbing listen throughout. I feel like I should probably be on harder drugs than coffee though.
