7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 27th July 2015
I was under the impression that Wilco had called it a day after their 2011 offering “The Whole Love” but it turns out I was wrong and they saw fit to release “Star Wars” for free a couple of weeks ago.
Opener “Art Of Almost” is an okay song, but then... five minutes in it all goes quiet and an almost krautrock rhythm section starts up allowing a monstrous high-energy wig-out to take place, it made me change my mind about what I was thinking was going to be a fairly hum-drum album. “I Might” follows on and keeps the energy high. “Dawned On Me” is probably the best track on the album and has ‘60s soul feel to it and a catchy chorus. “Black Moon” and “Rising Red Lung” hark back to songs like “Far Far Away” from their best album “Being There”. “Born Alone” has the pop elements that make “Dawned On Me” good. It’s fairly typical of Wilco’s last few albums really. Good but not spectacular.
