9/10 Mike Staff review, 21 March 2012

We've been waiting on this one for ages, as have many of you who pre-ordered it, because ol' Dean's a bit of a stickler for detail and wouldn't put up with anything but the finest pressing of his new LP for you, the fans. A very fine pressing this is, too, with no crackles or blemishes interrupting the silence and space in which McPhee's open tuned electric fingerpicking explorations can properly bloom. These are meditative, melodic passages of beautiful soft acoustic tones, never too busy or aggressive, with a beautiful gentle, deceptively technical approach to the instrument, allowing it to really chime and resonate with apparent ease. He has this lovely thing where he does these little runs of pinched chords leading to sonorous twinkles that's really effective. This is fingerpicking rooted in the Fahey tradition but subtly updated for effected electric guitar with a measured soundtracky minimal edge to it and mystically simple melodic hooks that hang in the air like soap bubbles. If you enjoyed that recent Suborno LP I'd imagine this'll be right up your street.
