This band are insanely good. I don't dance a great deal at gigs because I'm lazy, overweight and often tired but this bunch get me shaking my backside in no time, every time. You really feel like you've seen a quality bout of exciting musicianship and had a party into the bargain! I just noticed the completely clueless Andy Gill from the Independent gave this album two stars. The man is an idiot. Yeah, ZZE may be a bit busy sounding but this music is a dynamic rush of pan-global influences resulting in the tightest, most ecstatic new wave/funk/world music hybrid. There's a hearty amount of African influences here but this ain't cultural tourism which we'll leave to a load of these American bands. ZZE are a multi-cultural band that wear their passion on their sleeves, even the gobbledygook language is their own!! It's not like A Certain Ratio in their cheesy 80's guise, this is muscular, taut and fiercely groovy music that isn't afraid to collapse into experimental chaos or totally riff-out into space, They came from the Bristol fringe improv scene and they sound like they've been jamming up this delightful stew for a few years such is the depth of ability here. 'Katang' is the first record to capture their full-to-the-brim-with-ideas sound and deeply rhythmic tropical vibe. If you liked bands such as Five Style, Shrimpboat & Bristol's inexplicably long-departed Safetyword, you'll delight to the mad sounds of this thrustingly great long-player but seriously, comparisons are irrelevant as this four-piece are in their own bubble totally and all the more delightful for it!!
8/10 Kingbrockie Customer review,
Looking forward to hearing this after buying one of the Eps. I'd ignore the mainstream media put downs. Who reads the Independent anyway?
