Mahmoud Ahmed is mebbe the greatest Ethiopian singer of all time. His recordings with the Ibex Band are proper sweet, even awesome. This album, first released in 1978, is a world music classic. It's such a dry sounding record, which is something I quite like. The musicianship is brilliant, which is also summat I quite like. Its songs are sprawling compositions which have funk undertones and repetitive, almost shamanic vocals. You could easily find yourself journeying within your mind while listening to this. Some of it is soothing, other parts are rhythmic and you can feel your toes tapping and your body starting to lollop about in time to the funky bass lines and Afro grooves. This album has been remastered quite brilliantly by Tim Stollenwerk, whose remastering skills are top notch. You can really hear every instrument breathe and undulate. The eight songs on show here have many great Afrobeat moments and sterling vocal work and are really strong compositions. This album is a must-have for any Mahmoud Ahmed aficionado and is well worth a listen and purchase by anyone not totally au fait with this singer's impressive body of work.
