8/10 Li'l Biz 05 October 2011

Colin Stetson is a name I know little about and, even though we sold a shed-load, I somehow managed to miss his much talked about 'New History Warfare Vol 1 & 2' albums. Stetson is a Bass and Alto sax player making a living recording/performing with the likes of Bon Ivor, Tom Waits, Laurie Anderson, TV On The Radio and Arcade Fire as well as pursuing a solo career encompassing elements of jazz, avant-garde performance, ambient and transcendental minimalist drone. Now, I'm not a big fan of the saxophone but this man is capable of some pretty impressive stuff that may alter my opinion of the instrument. 'Those Who Didn't Run' consists of two compositions, the first, an ambient workout that uses sax and delay to create polyphonic grooves that bring to mind John Martyn's acoustic guitar/delay pedal experiments of the mid-70's. According to the press release there are no loops and overdubbing involved in these recordings which makes what I'm hearing all the more impressive. Flip it and the alto sax makes an appearance and Stetson's rhythmic interplay steps up another level. This one's insane! It's like a Steve Reich or Phillip Glass composition. It's a ridiculous display of virtuosity on Stetson's part that couldn't help but impress everybody. Amazing breathing skills. This 10” features hand-screened artwork by Nadia Moss and looks as lovely as it sounds.
