Well, here we've got a dead limited compilation LP of international indie rock and dreampop on Keep It Yours Records. Three tracks in and the emphasis certainly seems to be on the floaty beach-holiday-nostalgia style college rock bands that you really can't leave the house without stumbling over nowadays. Y'know, following on that Abe Vigoda/Crystal Stilts type template, but only occasionally coming up with anything particularly attention-grabbing. That said the songs are pretty consistently not annoying me or making me angry or anything, and there are occasional tracks that've made my ears prick up - the French Films number that closes the first side, for example, is a rousing little piece, like a more bombastic Bunnymen, and the Keep Shelly In Athens instrumental track that opens the flip has a certain airy flanged groove that's really warm and inviting. The further I get into this comp the clearer it is that it's a real labour of love. I do prefer when these types of bands have a bit more rock about them but that's just my preference. There's a lot of this modern day dreampop about, fusing Spector-esque production and washes of reverb with a '90s shoegaze aesthetic, and this compilation is a window into that world, giving an overview of some of the lesser known artists in a well sequenced and consistently listenable mix. It closes with a couple of slightly incongruous bedroom electro numbers but even here the quality is consistently quite good. 'Not bad's all round for this one.
