Darren Hayman makes a lot of music. Known primarily for his stint as singer-songwriter of indie-pop favourites Hefner, nowadays he can be found writing and performing with various characters including members of The Wave Pictures and 'Allo Darlin whilst making an effort to perform live in obscure and intimate situations. 'The Ship's Piano' is a collection of low-key ballads performed on Hayman's Ship's Piano - a small scale piano designed to be used on boats. Hayman's was built in France in 1933 and folds away to resemble a sideboard. The album's finale is Darren's romanticised vision of the piano's history which I like. Elsewhere Hayman presents ten reliable slices of light-as-a-feather indie-pop in his usual heartfelt and charismatic style. I'm not all that familiar with his recent output but this is spot-on and will no doubt please the converted. Especially enjoying the extremely subtle use of space echo and analog electronics. The man certainly has a handle on producing his own tracks. Lovely stuff.
