Wild Flag is very much what you would call a “superband”, meaning they are members of indie rock “royalty”, not that they can see through walls and leap buildings with a single bound. No sireee. Wild Flag have some real indie power players in their ranks. They have members of Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks...to name but four. They don't sound to dissimilar to the afore mentioned bands. This record has the same energy as anything that they might have done in other bands and the songwriting is also of a very high standard. The production is also really fucking good. It's as pristine a recording as you would want to hear. Brownstiens voice is so clear and full to the brim with vigour. All the instrumentation is really good. I mean its top notch. The most immediate songs are the best, and this record has plenty of catchy direct numbers, such as the “should be a single” “Endless Talk”, which ticks all the boxes. Also rather fine is the amazing “Racehorse” which leaves a lot of other power pop songs standing in the Pen (really dodgy horse related pun) This is a super album from a superband...where's mi Krypton.....?
