9/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 11th January 2015

Laura Marling’s third album “A Creature I Don’t Know”, from 2011, and follow up to 2010’s brilliant “I Speak Because I Can” finds her with more of a confident swagger than ever before. There’s an assured air about her performance on opener “The Muse”. The production is on a bigger scale too. By now, Laura Marling can be compared to greats like Joni Mitchell. Jazzy flourishes on “I Was Just A Card” are reminiscent of Mitchell’s “Hissing Of Summer Lawns” period. The stand-out track here is the magnificent “Sophia” which builds nicely to have a real ‘70s songwriter vibe, updated for now. The songs on “A Creature I Don’t Know” are more complex in terms of production, arrangement and melody than on her previous albums and that makes this album less instant and more of a grower. Ultimately, this is to the benefit of the listener.
