This is the debut outing from Rangers associate Peter Berends A.K.A Kwjaz and features two side long tracks on one tasty looking 12". Not an easy one to pin down without at least whispering the name James Ferraro, this debut is full on cosmic mix tape madness. Opener 'Once In Babylon' plays like a mash-up of rare soul, funk and cosmic jazz singles all played at the wrong speed. It's hard to tell if these are samples or original performances but the overall hypnagogic washout gives the music a bongtastic consistency that can't help but please. There are bits that sound like Italian Cop Show themes augmented with lazy bossa beats, bits that sound like Madlib when he's off on one of his cut-up jazz excursions, bits that sound like Steve Reich jammin' with Jan Hammer, bits that induce complete New Age tranquility in the listener and a bunch of mind-bending debris in between. Cheeky biz and plenty to take in by the sounds of it. I can hear elements of Sun Araw, Ferraro, Tomutonttu and a bunch others and that's just on the first side. Flip it and the hallucinatory space adventures continue continue to pleasure. This is an amazing, if slightly mind-altering release that's gonna take a few listens before all the detail kicks in. Rest assured this is well worth further investigation and represents another classic-in-the-making for Not Not Fun. Those kids be on a roll yo! This one gets five just for fucking with me. Who knows how you pronounce the name and fuck knows what speed it's supposed to be played at. 45rpm I reckon but you could easily get away with playing at 33. Jazmadness
