- Silly Hat vs Egale Hat by Dan Deacon

Dan Deacon, is, of course, one of the brightest stars on the experimental pop scene nowadays, but where did he start out? Well, this is one of a couple of releases this week that want to tell you, in staggering and some might say unnecessary detail, about this particular visionary's roots. The first of this double-LP set is very experimental, and definitely more on the abstract/sound collage end of the scale, with only three tracks on the entire disc. The album's other nine tracks are squeezed onto the other disc, which naturally makes for a much more focused and, to my ears, pleasing listen. At its best this is interesting experimental pop, but at its worst it's unfocused improvised guff. Certainly interesting, especially if you're a fan of Deacon's current work, but not by any means a starting point for people who want to explore what this guy is capable of. Interesting bedroom experimentation but very hit-and-miss indeed. File under 'curio', not 'masterpiece'.
