8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 11 August 2011
This self-titled and tastefully packaged little CD is the debut solo outing for audio-visual artist and experimental musician Vicente García Landa, recording under the moniker of Fonogram. Along with a host of contributions and samples from friends Landa has constructed a collage of ambient soundscapes, brief audio snippets and all out singer-songwriter-esque compositions. The atmosphere of these songs differ greatly from track to track and are all inspired by specific events or ideas which gives this collection an eclectic and otherworldly appeal. For example it opens with a new age, Bladerunner-esque ambient piece that wouldn't sound out of place on a Dylan Ettinger LP. This is followed by a tense psychedelic number in the Velvets' tradition that makes great use of acoustic guitar samples and a dramatic vocal arrangement. Elsewhere a plethora of field recordings and samples are employed to great effect in Landa's mission to create vastly different atmospheres and moods within each piece of music. He certainly has the skill and creative ingenuity to translate a host of different experiences and emotions whilst maintaining a consistently listenable output. Interesting stuff.
