Ralph Steinbrüchel is a new name to me but you power nerds out there are probably familiar with his previous work for Room 40. Steinbrüchel currently lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland (one of my favourite cities on earth) and seems to spend his time crafting intellectualised forms of experimental and ambient music. In this case, 'Narrow' explores the concept of reductive and transformative composition. I won't pretend I understand what this means but it makes for some very blissful new age tracks formed from a super minimal palette of fundamental tones and drones. Split into six pieces, each about four minutes in length with the exception of the opening piece that clocks in at around twenty minutes, Steinbrüchel digs deeper into the concept with each track, reintroducing familiar elements and reforming them into new and ever evolving shapes. It's very much in the Eno vein of pure ambience and makes for a inviting, warm and peaceful listening experience. A must have for those of you on a new age trip.
