- Mechul: Singles & Rarities by Erkin Koray
8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 01 September 2011
Sublime Frequencies are on the case again, highlighting the careers of lesser known, fantastically awesome artists of non-western origin. This time around it's Turkish Rock'n'Roll pioneer Erkin Koray. An immensely talented guitar playing, singer and band leader, Koray's career began back in the 1957 when he formed Turkey's first R'n'R combo. He still writes and performs to this day and is considered the father of Turkey's modern hybrid rock format known as Arabesque. These eleven tracks have been compiled from Koray's personal collection (compiled and sequenced by Mark Gerkis, who also provides the background info) of rare singles dating from 1970-77 and display his ability to twist the traditions of eastern folk balladry, pop, psychedelia and rock into something altogether unique and personal. These eleven tracks are all over the shop, showcasing Koray's ability to dance around different styles and techniques whilst blowing your mind with his overwhelming voice and exceptional guitar technique. You can hear him literally mashing up the principles of Egyptian balladry with 60's psychedelic pop and classic 70's style hard rock. It will have driven people insane at the time and still sounds distinct and fresh to this day. More impressive still is the fact that he self-recorded/produced all these tracks! With an extensive back catalogue to explore this is an excellent introduction to an impressively prolific artist. Gotta love these Sublime Frequencies comps. Nice work lads.
