8/10 Mike Staff review, 01 August 2011
Let's deal with the elephant in the room first. Yes, Killed by 9V Batteries is a bloody terrible band name. One of the worst. There, now I've addressed that, on to the record, which is actually very good! It is what we in the '90s called "alternative rock". It reminds me of those bands...you know, Sonic Youth, Cable, Urusei Yatsura, Archers of Loaf...Brian just piped in with AC Acoustics so I'll say them too. It's very much on the noisy side of that type of rock, though. There's a quiet song that sounds a bit like Pavement too. I guess for modern comparisons I'd say maybe a less twee take on the stuff that Danbananamanackroyd or Los Campesinos are peddling, or maybe a less shit take on Wu Lyf. It's got elements of the dancey post-hardcore fun of that cheap Hired Muscle CD album we've been selling heaps of (for good reason!) too. It's refreshingly unpretentious and melodic and hyperactive and if you like your indie rock with the emphasis on the rock it'll probably make you dance around like a right old twat.
