- Early Rappers by Various
I talked to some cool pub dwelling lass the other week and she was interested in my thoughts on contemporary comedy. I recommended she give the mad, bad and quite lovely Stewart Lee a try. She came back and said words to the effect of "Phwoarr, he's a bit of a Silver Fox isn't he? But I don't get that joke about the rappers, you know, the rappers they have these days". This made me laugh even more than the original "joke" which is a play on an older generation's bafflement and general ignorance of youth culture. I showed this to our office erm...bitch, Bitchy Lady and she sneered, "Those goddamn pussies ain't no freakin' rappers you jelly-brained HO! Those is just people who talked on their records before rappers were invented by Debbie Harry and her sinister NY gang the Blondies! Git with the plan you old deluded chicken-fart!!" I showed this to Phil and he said, "Ooooh I like this one it sounds like CAN". All I know is that a compilation that contains Bo Diddley, U-Roy, The Last Poets and Chuck Berry, not to mention the equine spoken delivery of Dr. Horse must be worth a punt. No Hennessy, bling, shooters or furious Rolex stealing ladies to be found here but as a selection of old blues, R'n'R funk with a random splash of Jamaican magic goes, you've got it made with this lovingly compiled collection. Yo mamma it's hot.
