I missed the Tri Angle EP of this guy's material first time around. I was in the pub or something, away from this madhouse. What we have here is basically a hefty collection of his bestest drowsy beats and slo-mo escapist rhythms, shorn of the main gallery of ethereal vocal smears and whacked-out vocodered haze that characterises a great deal of this new dreampop, mongstep and whatnot. His work has a depth and perception that elevates it beyond mere genre. Balearic electro struts and a wondrous branch of warm hip-hop euphoria informs much of his sound and here the considered snares, balmy bass pulses and dense fuzzy waves of emotive synth wash over you, bringing with them a tidal wave of smudged, dreamy unintelligible vocal snippets that are content hovering on the periphery, letting the grooves ride like the cheeky languid fatties they are. I cannot sit here and wax lyrical about this kind of music for very long as it demands full personal immersion and this LP is rich with elegance, loving detail and lots of strong, fresh ideas. As far as an album of "instrumentals" goes Clams Casino's stuff is nigh-on essential listening for any lover of modern soulful electronica and the more savvy end of laid-back hip-hop science. A really cracking start to this afternoon's write-ups!!
