Oooh, this is nice! Really busy ambient stylings from Chicago-based Kentuckians (is that a word?) Caboladies. They use synths and processed guitar to make bustling, textured, atmospheric jams. The first one sounds like a movie scene in a rainforest where the characters are in constant peril from all manner of buzzing, oozing creatures, then we're transported into space where a vaguely rhythmic, vaguely melodic army of robots set to work repairing one another in a giant echoey warehouse on Mars. Next thing we know we're in a great glass elevator back to earth, watching stars from years past explode in distant galaxies, then into the primordial swamp as the building blocks of life pop and fizz into being...This is much less straightforward than the bulk of the kosmische stuff we've been getting in and that sense of playfulness and imagination really gives these guys an edge, I think. Not enough melody and repetition to really be psych, too busy to really be straightforward ambient drone, these guys' work is basically finely detailed tone paintings. That's how I like to think of it. There's life and love coming from the grooves of this record, far more than this pretentious bullshit review properly expressed. Synth/drone/noise fans will find this stuff mouthwatering no doubt.
