I've got another synthpop record to review, this time the new Soft Metals debut on Captured Tracks. As the press release relates in stomach-churning and unnecessary detail, these guys are boyfriend and girlfriend. Well done, I suppose. Hope you're happy and that. Anyway, to celebrate their onion they've made a dead minimal album of woozy electropop with drifty female dreampop vocals. I guess it's like writing your own wedding vows or something isn't it. Why write a hastily scribbled romantic Post-It when you could make a minimal wave song about it instead? They're just using their imaginations. Nah, to be honest the music isn't as sickly as others of the couples-in-bands persuasion (hi Mates of State), but ultimately it doesn't feel all that worthwhile to me either...it falls too often into well studied but anonymously retro background music. I guess my problem here, as with a lot of minimal wave stuff, is that because there's not a lot going on elsewhere it's really noticeable if you don't have consistently great, simple tunes. Eh, I dunno. I'm not offended but I can't find much to get excited about here either.
