4/10 Mike Staff review, 28 July 2011
We've got a couple of 7"s from Third Man in this week. I tried to review the Stephen Colbert/Black Belles one first but quickly tired of the TV funny man's cod-Tenacious D stylings (best line of that single: "If I wasn't over you, why would I write this song? Think about it." Honestly, that's all you really need to know.). This Black Milk one is a mega slick hip-hop thing with all live instruments throwing out funk rock vibes. As with so many previous Third Man releases it's kind of a novelty single. Yeah, just as much as that other bullshit with the telly comedian singing on it. Just as much as that ukulele virtuoso with the unlistenably polished bluegrass backing. Just as much as that recording of an auctioneer. Just as much as Seasick "sodding" Steve. The second side of this one is marginally better than the first but basically this record involves a man who wants to be Jay Z being backed by a band who want to be Dreadzone. Business Lady just compared it to Jamiroquai. Brian simply said it was shit. Who does Jack White think we are?
