8/10 Mike Staff review, 02 August 2011
This record has totally amazing artwork. I actually picked it out of the box on the strength of its cover, with no idea what to expect from the music contained on it. Very much a thing of beauty. As for the music, R/S is a collaboration between Editions Mego founder Peter Rehberg and Marcus Schmickler, playing improvised power electronics pieces. This LP has a couple of tracks recorded live in Chicago and one from the No Fun Fest in New York. It's pretty abrasive stuff at first, but I've quickly got sucked into the swirling maelstrom of noise they're making and I'm actually finding it very involving. There's a part about halfway through side one (after a section which our Dave just said sounds like "putting a pig through a wormhole through space and time"), where there's loads of fluttering microbeats going on and an undulating, densely layered rhythm starts to develop which is dead effective. There's more of the same on the second side, really. Lots of squeaks and whistles and deep static rumbles and throbs and crunches and the like. A very immersive listen, and something I could totally see myself enjoying live in an interesting space. Probably not one to play at parties, though.
