Tor Lundvall is a new name to me but looking at his extensive collection of releases since 1997 I can see he's been quite busy! This 4CD set gathers together his three seasonal albums (Winter, Spring and Summer) called Ice, The Mist and Under the Shadows Of Trees. Plus there's a ten track bonus disc called Turning which fills in the missing seasonal gap. So you can now listen to a disc each season and feel content that you're covered for Tor all year round. The music is a mix of ambient, neoclassical, electronics and drone. They were recorded between 1998 and 2003 and I guess this box is a great place to start for a newcomer. Listening to the Ice disc now and I can hear shades of Harold Budd in there with lots of echoey piano and general lushness. It's all swathed in wintry bleakness as well. Not got time to listen to the whole thing (I wish) but I thought I'd see what the summer disc was like and that's sounding great too. This is more droney and electronic than the Winter disc. It's got a dreamlike quality so you kind of feel like you're sleeping while you're listening to it. There's slowed down processed vocals on some of the tracks and the whole thing sounds masterfully put together. It's weirdly not as uplifting for a summery sounding disc as I expected it to be...it sounds kinda early 4AD-ish. Dreamy and lush sounding. I'll have to check out the rest of the discs when I get a mo!
