Bibio a.k.a James Wilkinson returns with T.O.Y.S., a four track E.P that features 'Take Off Your Shirt' as its lead track. It's the third single off Bibio's recent 'Mind Bokeh' LP that has seen Bibio take his production technique next level whilst broadening his musical palette and as a result, his target audience. 'Take Of Your Shirt' is a perfect example of the curveballs being chucked about on 'Mind Bokeh' as it features grunge aping guitar theatrics and a genuinely hooky vocal line that has seen this little beauty getting airplay on Radio 1. Not what I'd expect from the lad but nevertheless it's a strong cut. It's followed a crafty DMX style hard electro funk jam that again features a fantastic vocal, this time of the Peter Frampton variety. This one stinks of '80s power pop, includes a wild guitar solo and isn't that far removed from the jams on the recent Ford & Lopatin LP. Flip it and you get 'Chancylvania', another super funky electro outing that reminds me of Ben Butler and Mousepad, Debruit and Aphex Twin jammin' together after a particularly heated debate over which is the best of the Herbie Hancock LPs. Finally it's a reworking of 'Take Off Your Shirt' that begins with fakey crowd sounds before Wilkinson struts in doing his best take on the famous Minneapolis sound, Prince guitar solos included. It's totally mint. Great EP on hot pink vinyl. OW!
