8/10 Phil Staff review, 14 July 2011
In case you're not familiar with this label you should be. The packaging is awesome! Each release comes out in the fanciest packaging I've ever seen a label do. The limited versions of these come with individually handmade books which are all different. I can't comprehend how long it must take to do 'em and I was half tempted to get 'em all myself just cos they're such lovely things they're more like pieces of art than anything else. Not wishing to devalue the music though which has been super good an' all. That aside these guys are a right pair of Towells, Harry and Stuart are their names and together they are the brothers Towell aka Paper Relics! The flowery tractor on the front of the sleeve should give you an idea that you're entering a world of pastoral loveliness. Bedroom recordings of acoustic guitars and field recordings evoking memories of meadows, Middle England, the countryside, cows, angry farmers, etc. It's a delightful thing to listen to and it reminds me of some of the Epic 45 related projects (My Autumn Empire, El Heath) etc. The background noises are largely field recordings and them coupled with the twiddly folkish guitar ramblings makes for a lovely listen from start to end. I suspect this will appeal to Hood fans as well. Excellent!
