- The Fox by Niki & The Dove

Swedish synthpop masters Niki & The Dove return with a new EP 'The Fox' on their newly christened home; Sub Pop (yeah, I know...more Sub Pop for B.L). If you heard last year's 'DJ, Ease My Mind' on Moshi Moshi you'll know that N&TD are bloody serious about synth pop! 'The Fox' is an epic beast of a pop song that brings to mind '80s big hitters like Kate Bush, Cyndia Lauper and Peter Gabriel. It's pretty damn good but it's so fantastical it's almost impossible to take seriously, much like the best of the music made in the '80s. I guess the closest modern comparisons would be Cold Cave or something in that Glacial territory. Could almost be Ford & Lopatin. In fact, Malin should definitely guest on a F&L track, that'd be a match made in power pop heaven. Flip it and you get two more newies. 'Gentle Roar' is a minimally arranged tune based on a complex afro-rhythm track and Malin's strong vocal delivery. It has that Bjork style minimalism that comes about from the vocal being the dominant melodic vehicle. On 'Somebody (Drum Machine Version)' Malin kicks up the tempo and goes wild with the arpeggios with a straight up emotional party jam that brings together the mastery of Purple Rain-era Prince and Cyndi Lauper. It's the surprise of the day and I'm fucking loving it. Thanks Malin, you just aquired yourself a new fan.
