This week we got four Russell Hoke LPs in which we bought from the big man himself. They're all stupidly limited to 200 copies each and the sleeves are all hand assembled by Mr Hoke himself. The four albums we've got are 'He Would Have Been A Fine Young Man', 'Comet of Despair', 'Cosmic Outlaw' and 'If I Had Been The Universe'. The 'Magic Of My Youth' set we got in a year or two ago blew me away. I bloody love that album! All four of these albums are ace. If you're into mad Texans making lo-fi blues/psych and folk then look no further. His lo-fi brand of bedroom style recordings are totally charming. A couple of the albums here remind me of Jeffrey Lewis at times... I've not made that connection before until earlier in the week despite having heard them loads. There some hints of early Daniel Johnston in there but it's way less deranged. In fact it's not deranged at all. Essentially it's man, guitar and harmonica making stripped back folk songs and they're dripping with charm. I like all four of these albums a lot.
