A new album from TMBG is the ultimate comforting experience (second place is coming home to find Thierry Henry in your living room, waiting up for you with a cup of tea and a video reel of his great goals against Spurs). It's sheer class. One of the things I like to do when I get a newie from TMBG is drink some coffee, and have a geez at the track listing, and try and guess which John sings which song and what style of song it might be...between crying tears of joy and chuckling occasionally. JOIN US is TMBG's 15th studio album and I reckon there's life in the 'Giants legs yet. I reckon this LP might be their most hook filled album to date...it comes at you like a demented fisherman...it's all hooks and haddock. Well, mebbe not so much haddock but it is hella tune-laden. It's 18 songs of pure charm that only the 'Giants can do. They are still singing songs with slightly dirgey lyrics and bittersweet tuneage. After all they are the masters at this style of songwriting. All the songs have great lyrics and are played with great gusto. They are still filling songs and listeners with what can only be called child-like wonder. It's a fast paced record. There aren't that many tracks that are downbeat, or even down tempo. It's all rather fast and urgent and there are moments like "Judy Is Your Vietnam" and the ace "Let Your Hair Hang Down" that gives you butterflies in your New Dehli. It's like they have found an extra gear. I reckon the backbone of the band is also fully wedged in, maybe, in the words of  Emperor Palpatine "...fully operational...". TMBG haven't exactly thrown the template into the fire, or got really strong forearms and "raised the bar", they have merely released a really ace album that is funny, touching and occasionally surreal. It's TMBG all over and it's ACE!!!!!
