8/10 Clinton Staff review, 29 July 2011
Its been a while since the last edition of Clint's World Music Corner. They don't call me the Andy Kershaw of Norman Records due to my stalking abilities you know so here we are with the new thing on Soul Jazz Records. This was an attempt by the label to record the unique Afro-percussive music of Belize (formerly British Honduras). They went out there with a tape recorder and taped the lads and lasses doing their thing which is superbly evocative drum and voice chanting. Hypnotic in the extreme yet simple and life affirming, this is a splendid document which will please anyone interested in the Samba Schools of Brazil, poly-rhythmical drums of Haiti, and Nigeria's Afrobeat cultures. It comes as you might expect in wonderful packaging featuring text on the recordings as well as documents on the history of the music and the country.
