8/10 Clinton Staff review, 22 July 2011

I'm sure the guys here are trying to trick me with all this '80s revivalist stuff I get and one day I will be handed a 12" that actually did appear on an early edition of ITV's The Chart Show rather than ones that just sound like they were. This is a band of two brothers from LA, formerly known as Teen Inc. This sounds like 1986, a perfect cross breed of Prince and Scritti Politti. Expertly produced, the drums don't half thump along and there is a wonderful stinging Hammond organ sounds providing some much needed soul amidst the programming. The production work of John 'Jellybean' Benitez springs to mind (Madonna, Whitney, Sheena Easton, etc) and at their most slick and funky Prefab Sprout veered in this direction (and I for one wish they'd gone further). The vocals are pure Prince (though lack the histrionic shouts and squeals of His Purpleness). The final track is a little wishy-washy and wouldn't pass muster on a Wendy and Lisa B sides collection though the other two tunes are noticeably strong. The fact that this is coming out on 4AD beggars belief. The total antithesis of what they stood for in the 1980s.
