9/10 sel Customer review, 29th January 2017
So there we are, another Island artist. Effortless pretty, naturally savvy, and immensely talented. Sóley. She used to play piano for Seabear and the follow up project of Seabear- head Sindri Már Sigfússon, Sin Fang.
And we get what we expect: lightly lingering mystic piano based tunes with an unusual voice singing about the 6/7 of hidden depths of life.
And yes, she does share the same notion with her Icelandic colleagues of Mum and Amiina, and yes, it also feels a bit like looking through translucent thin ice.
Sóley Stefánsdóttir is fairly earthy, made of trees and reticulate branches, like the cover suggests, rooted in Icelandic soil [even though she sings in English]. And just like this little island shares the traditional belief in trolls, she is incorporating beautiful modern elements like noises, synths and drones into her music.
Multi instrumentalist Sóley recorded her first full length album “We Sink” at home with Sindri and husband Héðinn Finnson. Piano and organ, bass and guitars, marimbas, drums and percussion, clarinet, synths, noises and drones, and vocals build the backdrop for her "dream-like" and "dark surreal" stories. Memories of hushed up secrets emerge. Remorse and regret. Dancing in faded gowns to a waltzing piano, in an empty room under dusty chandeliers.
The thirteen* songs of “We Sink” are pleasant and delightful, they keep growing on you every time you listen to this album, building nests in your ear canal, fluttering and flustering like little birds.
* With the 4th re-release you get even 4 more songs, previously released on the EP “Krómantík”
