8/10 Li'l Biz Staff review, 28 July 2011
Land Observations is a new solo project exploring the possibilities of motorik rhythms and layered guitars from Appliance guitarist James Brooks. Opening track 'Viae (In C Major)' is a sterling example of how krautrock rhythms and melodies can be achieved by a single performer with a guitar and simple effects set-up. It's a beautiful piece, like a Neu! tune without the backing band. Flip it and get another piece based on similar principles. The rhythm pattern is established first then additional, more complex melodic structures are added on top with an emphasis on minimalism. To some extent it reminds me of a laid back version of the recent solo work from Ponytail guitarist Dustin Wong with the focus being stripped down propulsive rhythms as opposed to full on guitar theatrics. The final track deviates from the first compositions and even goes as far as adding a piano and fuller melodic chords. It's short but tellingly sweet. Look forward to hearing more from this lad.
