Aren't Holy Roar a nu-screamo type label? That's what I thought they were doing anyway, but that's not what this is at all! This single from Gallops is mega precise instrumental atmospheric stuff with synths and guitars. The drumming is totally slick and well recorded and the fills are properly tasty and there's a lovely bit of squelch on the synths and the dynamics go up and down and that. It's good! I'm surprised at how good! There's almost a kind of Secret Machines or Fall of Troy thing going on with the level of precision and tightness, but there's more of a sense of fun here too. On the B side we've got a bit more of a rocky workout at the start before it goes into a lovely bit of tech wizardry, this time giving the guitarist a bit of a chance to show of his chops with some speedy palm-muted riffing over a steady drum groove providing the basis for the rest of the track. About halfway through it starts sounding quite a lot like Battles. In fact, if you're into Battles I'd wager you'd enjoy this 7" quite a lot. It's instrumental rock with synths that makes you want to dance, with that same mix of playfulness and unabashed virtuosity that make the aforementioned supergroup so charming.
