Five years ago I was reviewing Maximo Park singles. Now I'm here listening to some Chinese dude talking about his life in Taoshan Village, Taiwan. This CD and book tells the story of the life of the  Atayal who are a group of Aborginal folks living in said village in Hsinchu County. Not speaking Chinese or whichever variant it is on here I couldn't tell you much about what's being said but essentially it's a bunch of field recordings following the life of these people. And you get old folk songs being sung, clattering from strange woody instruments, stories from old guys and kids singing and yabbering on. All of this over field recordings of insects and the background noise of what it must be like to live in the village. It's kind of an audio documentary you'll never be able to understand. Fortunately there's a fat booklet chocka with pics and an English translation and it's a weirdly arresting listen!
