This is the first release of these guys playing as a duo, coming after their magnificent teaming with Keiji Haino. Two side-long electroacoustic workouts are the order of the day with Jim on synths, percussion and strings while Oren is on guitar, synth and percussion duties. The audio was recorded in January 2011 in Tokyo and there's a whole lot going on here which is difficult to digest on first listen. There are fractured melodies and a lot of the time a "tune" threatens to break through but never quite makes it. I was expecting a massive noodle-fest but actually what's on offer is remarkably warm and accessible. It's just about possible at various points to identify which artist is responsible for a particular sound, Jim's synth work is clear, especially after listening to his Japanese Tour CD with Carlos Giffoni which is also released this week. Also Oren's guitar is fairly distinctive. The sustained tones for example recalling his work on 'The Pendulum's Embrace' album. Things seem to shift from that kind of minimal aesthetic to a slightly "fuller" sound, cue Jim. I particularly like the low end hums which become fractured by higher pitches and even pretty little chimes. Nothing blew my socks off here but it's certainly an inviting sonic landscape to spend some time within. Sold out at source as they say.
