- Trowo Phurnag Ceremony by Phurpa
8/10 Phil Staff review, 16 June 2011
Not content with giving John Elliott from Emeralds his own label through Editions Mego (Spectrum Spools), Peter Rehberg has given Stephen O' Malley a sub label called 'Ideologic Organ'. Here's the first fruit of this collaboration by Phurpa who are a bunch of Russian dudes and the music on Trowo Phurnag Ceremony was recorded in 2005. The opener is 7 minutes of satanic druidish guttural vocal rumblings which I weirdly found totally compelling. Apparently the band have been observing into Iranian, Egyptian and Tibetan cultures for inspiration. Some of which you can hear as accompanying some of the swirling vocal doomy drones is Tibetan sounding percussion (bowls and that) and occasionally there's some weird Middle eastern vibe lurking in the background. Most though it's dark doomy intense chanting vocals which are bass heavy, deep and make you feel a bit strange and possessed.
