Lord Ralph Cumbers makes a welcome return with his debut for Peverelist's Punch Drunk label and it's a party guaranteed cut harnessing the energy of early UK hardcore/house and future garage/dubstep. Oldskool rave stabs and female vocal sample are the order of the day and the bassline is wicked and the drums are massive and rolling. Solid production as ever but where's his trumpet?? Towards the end a cool acidic sound comes in for a short while and throughout there are a few little sorta IDM tricks/flourishes to spice things up. Am digging the 'For Bill Burroughs' writing etched into the runout groove of the underside. 'So Cruel' is a darker more brooding track with heavy distorted kicks and very nice female vocal sample, things are fairly stripped back but as the track evolves it reveals new layers of depth for a cerebral heads down 4am stomper. Both quality tunes and highly recommended.
