7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 2nd August 2015
These Trails were a duo made up of couple Margaret Morgan and Patrick Cockett. This eponymous outing was the only material they recorded. It was recorded in Hawaii where they lived.
Listening to the album, I can only imagine that this is folk music is influenced by their surroundings. It’s kind of organic, beautiful and uplifting. Opener, “These Trails” just fills you with pleasant feelings whilst reminding me of that kind of Fuzzy-Felt Folk from the kids TV shows of the ‘70s. You can trace its influence to the likes of Joanna Newsom on “Of Broken Links..” As that song will attest, there are plenty of moments of acid folk on here, but they still have a blue sea, blue sky and greenery positivity to their sound. There are bits that test you and some bits border on self-indulgent. It straddles a paradoxical divide between sounding like nothing else…ever, meaning it’s timeless and sounding a bit dated. It is quite good though.
