8/10 Dave Staff review, 16 June 2011

This curio comes from a Mexican movie called Malos Habitos (Bad Habits), a "thinking man's horror film" dealing with issues of faith, adultery, food and family. If you think this sounds hard to swallow, then you'd best look away now. But if you find that your curiosity has been aroused and not on the street killing cats, then you might find this a rather intriguing proposition. This record is a lush, orchestrated affair that has been lovingly crafted. It sounds amazing, sophisticated and (lazy journalism alert) real soundtracky. There are 20 compositions on this CD, some of them have intricate piano motifs tying them together, other tracks have brooding orchestral passages (huh, huh I said passage) that sound quite ominous and no doubt lend a certain ambiance to the films dark tone. Some of the piano playing is absolutely brilliant, complex and assured. Other times the piano sounds like the plaintive cry of a new born lamb. There is a lot of space in this record. It doesn't sound like a typical Hollywoodland soundtrack. It sounds like it has religion running through its veins, as I'm sure its meant to. A piece of music that is complex, haunting and strangely affecting.
