9/10 Jack Customer review, 4th January 2015
Coming off the success of Narrow Stairs, we got introduced to the sound of Codes and Keys with the lead single "You Are A Tourist" a catchy tune with all the staples of any good Death Cab For Cutie song. Codes and Keys for some felt like 'more of the same' from the Seattle quartet, but it is an album that require more listens than it appears. "Home is a Fire" is one of the strangest openers the groups has unleashed since The Photo Album and "Stay Young, Go Dancing" is one of the best closers the band has ever written. Benjamin Gibbard's new optimistic lyrics ironically may have rubbed the listeners the wrong way, as the band is so often singing songs of heart ache and personal turmoil. While this album doesn't include songs of the calibre of "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" or "Title and Registration"; Codes and Keys has a general flow and sound that ranks it highly amongst its predecessors.
