I could swear last time I saw Oxes it was their "last ever" tour, but here they are again with a new 12". Wasn't expecting this, but their most recent LP and EP are both long time favourites of mine so I'll take what I can get from these guys. This 12" starts out with a brand new track, Crunchy Zest, which is pretty much what you'd expect from these guys. The main riff's a 5/4 stomper, and then it goes into some of that classy stop-start math shit these guys excel at. It's not the best thing they've ever done by any means, but it's certainly a welcome reminder of how great Oxes are capable of being. This song is followed by a pretty weird remix with quite an early-90s feel to it. Our Business Lady says it sounds like something out of Wipeout. It kind of reminds me of some of the stuff off that Gang of Four remix album that came out not too long back, too. Not really a great argument in favour of remixing rock music. The flipside's got a nine-minute mix of a song I've never heard before. It starts out all ambient drones and echoes and buzzes...oh, hang on, that's the entire track. Wow. That's not really what I wanted from this. I might feel better about it if it was by Growing or something but this is Oxes. It's atmospheric and interesting but where's the rock? Still, quite a varied disc, I suppose, and the new studio recording is better than decent, but it's a bit like having a great appetiser and then being told that's your whole meal. A new album or EP would be very welcome, though. Whenever you're ready, lads.
