- Raspberry Thighs/ Roman Hat by The Mantles
9/10 Brian Staff review, 07 April 2011
Quite obsessed with The Mantles, me. This SF quartet play wonderful, shambling lo-fi Velvets-y rock with a very strong New Zealand essence underpinning their casually melodic sound. You could really be listening to a Dunedin act from 1988 but they've definitely got their own distinct, loose yet beautifully-rounded songs to play so this is still the stuff of vintage dreams. I saw them live the other week which was a really cherishable moment in my life. Really lovely people that just exude this positive, natural, easy-going spirit! This sun-spangled, fuzzy, hazy sound is how I imagine rock music should sound in it's purest form with extra nods to half-forgotten first wave 60s psychers & the more obscure LA-based Paisley Underground moment of the 80s. If you adore the ragged, jangly tendrils & shards of guitar thrown up by beloved legends from various eras such as The Byrds, The Clean & early Pavement then this 7" will look great hanging out of your back pocket on a sunny day. If you are more than keen, why not hoover up absolutely everything by them - I normally don't condone such irresponsible behaviour but really, come on now, just get on the bus yo!!
