8/10 Brett Staff review, 07 April 2011
Aah, nuts.. Where would I be without my mid-morning nuts? Dead? Or alive? No man can say! This record has nothing to do with nuts other than the fact I'm reviewing it with a mouthful of them so I apologise for the digression; I entered into it because I'm having a hard time describing the tunes here. The guy's definitely on some sort of a weirdo outsider kinda tip with his oddball rhythmical shifts, ultra lo-fi recording style and extra-idiosyncratic approach to songwriting. 'Criminal' begins like some sort of doo-wop ballad (albeit about being at the police station), before jumping into life with a cheeky bassline and a shift into an Ariel Pink-style vocal delivery. Actually the Pinkelator is probably as decent a touchstone as I reckon I'm gonna manage here. 'Castle of Nothing' is even more bizarre if anything, a looping, phasey jam of pure oddball. Quite like it though!
