Hats off to Russell Haswell. Not only does he use and endorse The North Face outdoor wear clothing line, make an outstanding hellish racket but he also embraces emerging technologies as can be heard here on the specially pressed UHJ LP and 5.1 surround audio only DVD. I heard him play supporting Autechre (on the tour of which this release documents) and suddenly became possessed by this strange energy which resulted in me climbing onto the front of the stage and leaping off just as the audio finished while I was in mid-air. No doubt leaving bemused onlookers mumbling "Who's this idiotic daft cunt???? There's always one!" etc. The great thing about these recordings is that they put you right at the shows, with crowd noise and all. Haswell ploughs the full dynamic range of the audio spectrum with twisting, warping, totally uncompromising electronic scree being spewed up from his electronics in the finest of styles, just like Government Alpha, Hijokaiden, Incapacitants and all those Japanese noise junk warriors. Gutting that I don't have a 5.1 set up yet to devour the DVD! I'm looking forward to that immensely. A well decent racket! What I would really like to hear though is Russell sound-tracking a North Face clothing advert were an expedition crew climb K2 and are kept alive by Pertex stuffed down jackets and 'Full Live Salvage' on their ipods.
